This fascinating study, as outlined in “How to Motivate Your Employees: Give Them Compliments and Pizza,” looks at what truly motivates people: a compliment, a cash bonus, or a free pizza. Surprisingly, those in the cash group of the study performed marginally worse than the other groups, costing the company that much more money, besides for being the least motivated.
Basically, when outside of work, people are motivated by the mighty dollar. When in the midst of work, people are significantly more motivated through the power of encouragement, like through compliments and pizza. The compliment condition in the experiment performed the best, echoing the importance of genuine words of encouragement, which are much more important to employees than an impersonal cash bonus or a free lunch.
Remember: compliments are free and the most effective!
